If you’re an art lover, then you need to follow Ryan!

I am so fortunate to have worked with him out of the gate, so to speak - serendipity at its finest arranged this shoot!

Ryan taught me so much in one day, he will always feel like a brother to me. Working with him turned what was once camera-phobia into an ongoing cathartic relationship.

The only word that suits a camera in the right hands is: art.

Dear Ryan, while I am enthralled by your art and hope you paint every day, I also implore you to pick up a camera again and often. I’m looking so very forward to what next from you - and I thank you from the depths of my essence for being exactly you♥️💥📷✨

Letting My Hair Down in London

This is my 9th post, the last of my first pattern series of 9. I like how my profile looks when I do these, plus it helps me organize my content as I pull my IG life together and post daily🤭

Let me know you’re here, following along and what resonates with you, why…

Tupac pointed out that in Africa, people go from village to village exchanging their stories and that’s how community is formed. I’m here to learn from and about you, too - let’s meet up in the comments😘✨🥰

Would you believe me if I told you I cried for days after signing my first contract as a model? Here’s why…

I dedicated decades of my life 24/7 to children, families and their communities. My goal was to learn from the field what problems are leading to statistics that represent kids in our country, in order to discover some real working solutions.

in 2020, I opened a consultancy through which I hoped to share my insights with people who have or work with children. My fail was so epic, I am still drowning in debt.

(See my previous posts, where I share my story from the beginning, if you’re interested, feel a little lost here…)

The fact that an opportunity to build my platform came NOT through my blood, sweat, tears, or years of dedication; rather bone structure - which I have nothing to do with, hurt deeply for so many reasons.

I literally cried for days, and I don’t cry much; not because I hold back tears, but because tears don’t come easily after 50 years of life.

Then suddenly it dawned on me: I could have these lofty goals of mine and…no platform at all🤷‍♀️

I am infinitely grateful for all the people who have seen, heard, challenged, encouraged, believed in, signed and hired me! I’m so proud of my résumé already🥰

While I’ve always known I will achieve my greatest career goals at all costs, never in a billion years did I envision this being part of it…yet it’s making more sense each day♥️💥✨

One of the most surprising things I’ve learned so far is that which made me camera-phobic most of my life…is something too many of us have in common (more on that to come).

For now, here’s to embracing opportunities that lead the world into a kinder, more conscientious state - especially those that seem scary and counterintuitive😘

Continued; how I began modeling at 50 Y/O

When I looked at my contract, one of the very first things it said was, “Mother Agency” (MA). Although I’d been advised not to sign it if those words appeared anywhere on it…I smirked my innate little knowing that signing this contract was my honor and privilege.

I had no portfolio, practically no experience. The Source had been thoughtful and generous with their time when it came to our meeting…and it just felt right.

Listening to my gut has never let me down; to this day, signing my contract with @thesourcemodels was one of the absolute best decisions I’ve made! They have continued to take time for guiding, advising, educating, respecting, protecting, caring about me and so much more, in addition to representing me.

More to come as my story unfolds😘✨

I don’t know why neither Pete nor I ever thought to take some shots without my glasses but c’est la vie🥰😘

Cont. from previous post…

Immediately, I booked an appointment with @redmarketmiami - my favorite salon in the universe (yes you too, @redmarketnyc;) and hiiiii @victoriataylor305 and all🥰😘

After my hair was blown out, we took these pics outside the salon, then I forwarded them to @petpedrocks at @thesourcemodels - who booked that appointment with me😅

I remember walking into the office not knowing what I was feeling cuz it was all new, which has only happened a few times in my life. When I stepped inside and got situated, it was time to simply be me and see where this was going to take me.

It was clear to all: I was there to build a platform to reach millions with what I’ve learned from every child I’ve known, while spreading the love, hope and inspiration they gave me, along my way.

@jrichardmgmt asked the best and most important questions re: what I wanted and did not want. We discussed cutting my hair, which I assured us was not happening.

I’ve been offered a LOT of money for my hair from previously mentioned global icons in the beauty industry, whose children I was governess to at the time. Why cut and color my hair to look like theirs?

{Fun fact: some have said I started the top-knot and long hair trends because I’ve been copied a time or two. In that case, those are on a list of things that has yet to end. More on that never🤭}

Petra said things like, ‘Well, now trending in the industry is aging naturally and models with a purpose’ - it felt like I was dreaming. I was suddenly ready to embrace the possibilities✨ She also finally said, “Kim, we would like to manage your career” - I just got dizzy typing those words🤩

It made my head spin then, but to think back at who all was in the room; how carefully and competently they’ve managed my career and cared about me…makes me feel like the luckiest person in the world, given my goals and purpose: leading the world into a kinder, more conscientious state🌎

The person who introduced me told me firmly not to sign any contract if it said “Mother Agency” because he had a manager who might like to work with and represent me to many agencies…tbc😘

Continued: How and why I started modeling at 50 Y/O

When Pete and I discussed taking these photos, he told me I was camera-phobic because I hadn’t worked with him yet. He was right; he took time to get to know me, as well as my cause.

On our way to Ditchley Park, Pete pointed out how brave I was to travel to Oxfordshire and get in the car with a basic stranger. I assured him I’d done my homework and that my gut had a track record of keeping me safe.

During this shoot, Pete made me realize that life was handing me a platform I could use to reach my greatest career goals - by telling me he had no sympathy if I were to simply refuse it.

While running in Richmond Park days later, the thought came to me that I’d be living and/or working in the UK by the following year.

It seemed clear a dam had been opened within me:

I’d run away from cameras and modeling scouts since I was very young and decided Pete was wildly correct. Who was I to shun any gift life presents?

Perhaps my pace was influenced by my awareness that with every gift comes a cross to carry; every blessing, a burden to bear. More on cello in due time🤭

Upon my return the States, where I was working as a governess, I decided to embrace the idea of modeling and began schooling myself on the process by searching agencies in the area.

Before I had a chance to go to any open calls, I was on my client’s plane, heading to one of their properties for a few days with some friends; two of whom had been professional models all their lives and were about the same age as me...

When I mentioned my interest, they said they’d introduce me to their agents. Here’s how that went:

I was told the industry is brutally honest, the owner of their first choice for me was German and she’d want to see pics of me with no glasses, no make-up. If she “saw money”, she’d want to book an appointment with me. If not, they had lots of agents…

More soon! Thank you for reading😘🥰

Photographer: @peteseawardphotography Continued: how I started modeling at 50 Y/O…

I’d arrived to my hotel in London a bit early, left my things at the desk and stepped outside to the beauty that surrounds Richmond Park.

While crossing the street, the sun and cool air forced me to release the knot on top of my head. As my hair fell down around me, I thought to myself, “Ohhhh that feels so good; I don’t do this enough - if I find that photographer, the shoot will be called ‘Letting My Hair Down in London.’”

As I enjoyed the stunning views, I noticed a man with a camera taking photos at the opposite end of the viewing area. Despite the telescopes at the end where he stood, I wondered if the less popular end near me might be even more beauty-full.

I was hungry and needed some coffee so I waited as long as I could for the man to move on but he was obsessed, so I decided to slip by him. As I did, he complimented my hair. I thanked him and skedaddled.

I’d noticed though that his camera, up close, seemed even more proper than I’d imagined - not that I know much, but high quality stands out in any arena.

As I speed-walked away from him my brain replayed the pages of the book I’d daydreamed, the idea to locate the hotel photographer, the name I’d already just given to the shoot inside my head…and knew I wouldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t turn around.

Before I knew it, I’d traced my steps right back to him and asked if he was a professional photographer, to which he replied, “Well, some people say so”.

When I told him why I’d turned around, Pete said we’d better have coffee to discuss. He’d checked out of same hotel and checked back in after our meeting so we could discuss further.

I told Pete about my commitment to reach millions with what each child I’d worked with taught me and spread the love, hope and inspiration they gave me along my way.

Three days later, we were at Ditchley Park in Oxfordshire, shooting these photos. Stay tuned for more 👀

In the meantime, have yourself a super Saturday! Remember to take a moment or more for considering social skills as some of the absolute most important little things that make up a better bigger picture and the lack thereof quite the contrary…

Here’s to more eye contact, hearing each other out and responding respectfully to what is actually being said, cooperation, self-control, accountability to our own authentic human intelligence, sorting out facts from ideas and keeping them clearly sorted, responsibility to our environment and the impact we have on the world as a species and all the things that will undoubtedly lead us into a kinder, more conscientious world.

I’ve seen diagnoses reversed, or cancelled, because of eye contact alone. Kids who “can’t” make eye contact need us most to teach them the power of this social skill, as a starting point.

Shinichi Suzuki, founder of the Suzuki Method, pointed out that it’s the environment’s job to teach a child; so if they’re not learning, their environment is failing to teach them.

Every child who ever told me they couldn’t make eye contact never stopped after we discovered they actually could and it was the most wonderful process to witness ever, for so many reasons beyond words.

We all know diagnoses too often lead to medications that are inevitably leading to the addictions and overdoses plaguing us by storm. It doesn’t take billions of dollars to study the correlation; we can do basic mental math. The reason we don’t compute is throwing money at a problem seems more productive than not knowing what else in the actual fuckery we can do about it.

Which brings me back to what I learned for scientific fact from every child I ever met: it’s actually easier, more cost-effective and better for our over-all quality of life to improve the world around us than sustain the state it’s in…

Today’s all about those life-saving super social skills Saturday 🌎♥️💥🥰✨
